ASCOM Election: Presidential Aspirants Woo Supporters, Promise Proper Representation
· We have built cordial relationship with students. Go and verify- Sarumi
· I’ll ensure a Bursary unit is brought to Abusi- Esther
· I’m very experienced and capable to deliver- Tunmise
The 3 candidates vying for the Presidential post at this year’s Association of Student Communicators (ASCOM) elections, Yusuff Sarumi, Ogunwole Esther, and Omotayo Tunmise have recently, gave myriads of promises to hundreds of supporters who are key to their possible victory at the polls.
In an interview conducted by the ASCOM Press Crew and the Manifesto organised for all aspirants, the trio had the chance to project their plans in good time, letting students know how they aim to bring development to the department and the students in general.
Sarumi, who may be regarded as the most popular candidate, in his speech claimed that he has over the years, built a cordial relationship with students and that gives him the chance to know the issues they face first-hand.
Sarumi noted that the cordial relationship he has created with students over the years is enough achievement to put forward as he asks for the mandate of hundreds of students in the Mass Communication Department..
Esther, the only female candidate and a former winner of the Miss ASCOM and Miss AAPOLY pageantries, in her speech told students that she is coming to change the narrative and impact students in all areas. In her speech, she noted that the department’s image is important and she will ensure that the narrative that Mass Communication students are the bedrock of the institution will be further promoted by engaging students in academic, and entrepreneurial partnerships that would cut across all sectors of the department.
At the interview, Esther said that “I am running on a 3-Point Agenda; Seamless Studentship, Entreprenurial Support and Innovative Ideals (SEI). I want every student to know that Esther is coming to rewrite narratives and impact students directly. Over the years, students have suffered, going to the Main Campus to make payments. If there were a Bursary unit situated here, it could save students from unnecessary stress and wasted funds. I will ensure a Bursary unit is brought here permanently to make things easy for students.”
Tunmise, who also held the Vice-Presidential position during his ND programme told the crew that he was ready to bring sustainable development to the students because he is experienced in Student-Leadership and knows what it takes to motivate students.
He explained that students needed to be empowered in order to not only rely on their academic prowess, but also have entrepreneurial motivation to help them succeed at different levels. He said “I am practically full of experience when it comes to Student politics. When I was the Vice-President, we achieved a lot including creating the now-existing ASCOM Secretariat. I know how much students need to be empowered and I am bringing years of experience into play here if elected.” Tunmise, who also heads the Theatre Group of the Department explained that the urge in him to serve is why he is aspiring to be President.
The elections come up on Thursday, 25th August as the Department aims to elect new hands to stir the course of student leadership in the Department.
